Verification Guide: Intellectual Property
Patent and Trademark Verification
Boss Vision cross-references patent numbers with the USPTO database to verify patent status (active, expired, pending), filing date, expiration date, maintenance fee status, and assignee information. Trademarks are verified for registration status, class, and renewal dates. Copyright registrations are verified through the U.S. Copyright Office database. Any active litigation or disputes associated with the IP are flagged.
IP Valuation
IP valuation is the most complex of any sector on Boss Tag. The platform uses three approaches: income approach (projected revenue from licensing, royalties, or product sales attributable to the IP), market approach (comparable IP transactions and licensing deals), and cost approach (what it would cost to recreate the IP from scratch). Because IP valuation is inherently uncertain, the LTV cap is the lowest of any sector at 20%.
Revenue Documentation
For IP with existing revenue streams (licensed patents, streaming royalties, trademark licensing fees), upload revenue statements, licensing agreements, and royalty reports. Historical revenue data significantly improves the Documentation Score and provides the basis for income-based valuation. IP with no current revenue stream relies entirely on market and cost approaches, which produce wider valuation ranges.
